Professional Experience

Josephine’s work in various healthcare settings has shaped her deep understanding of how to best serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities:

  • Mercy Clinic – Cookeville (2000–Present):

Working at Mercy Clinic, a primary care setting, provided me with the opportunity to care for a diverse range of patients with varying medical needs. Among them were many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, each with unique strengths and challenges. These encounters deepened my understanding of how compassionate, individualized care can make a meaningful difference in a person’s daily life. Through ongoing interactions, I developed lasting connections and a stronger commitment to creating inclusive care environments that promote dignity, independence, and overall well‑being.

  • Vanderbilt University Medical Center – Nashville (1997–2000):

During my time at Vanderbilt, I had the privilege of meeting and caring for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a hospital setting. My primary goal was to foster an atmosphere of trust by offering genuine friendship and companionship, which often served as the foundation for achieving care goals and completing necessary tasks. This experience taught me that emotional connection is just as vital as clinical skill when supporting individuals in their health journey, and it continues to guide my approach to care today.

  • Trevecca Nursing Home – Nashville (1996–1997):

At Trevecca Nursing Home, I provided dedicated care to residents with a variety of health needs, including those with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I focused on ensuring comfort, dignity, and emotional well‑being, tailoring my approach to meet each resident’s individual preferences and abilities. This role strengthened my skills in patience, adaptability, and building trusting relationships that positively impact quality of life.

  • Prisons Health Services Debbery (1996–1997):

Working with Prisons Health Services presented unique challenges that required both resilience and compassion. I cared for individuals with complex medical and developmental needs in a structured and secure environment, ensuring they received respectful and thorough care. This experience sharpened my adaptability and reinforced my belief that every person, regardless of circumstance, deserves dignity, compassion, and high‑quality care.
